About These Stats

Stats at this level are fairly meaningless; I don't put much stock into them. The concept of BA is based on 1,000 ABs, with the idea that things average out over the long haul. The line drive outs and bloopers that go for singles, the hard hit balls and the dribblers, not to mention the extreme variability in defenses. So who cares what anyone hits across 36 PAs. There's too much noise in the data.

That said, I find it annoying that our system calculates "ROE" (reached on error) towards OBP.

For example: If you go 0-4 in a game, grounding out meekly four times -- but twice reach 1B because somebody dropped the ball -- you come out with a .500 OBP. That's silly and not how they do it in MLB. Why not calculate our statistics by the same standard?

What are we, the little sisters of the poor?

My two cents.

And once again, my thanks to John Reel & everyone else who works behind the scenes to make this great league possible. We are so lucky to have it and I'm grateful every single game we play.

As one who has entered the statistics in various divisions over the years and heard the many, many complaints about statistics and how this league uses them, I have one very simple solution which would make everything fair for all teams: put names to errors. Everyone wants to take advantage of using anonymous errors to keep ERAs down but not embarrass their fellow teammates by listing who has how many errors - but then, out of the same side of their mouths they want to be really lenient on their own players by counting an ROE as a hit so everyone can bat .300 on their roster.

Until we get managers to agree on those simple scoring issues and put up agreed upon statistics, none of these numbers will ever really matter.

That said, I agree with Jimmy here that an ROE should not count towards your OBP, nor should FCs.

But, "Little Sisters of the Poor?" Come on, man. At least those "sisters" own their errors.

For what it is worth, I have a couple cents to add to this statistic discussion. I believe it is widely agreed, as Mr. Currier stated, "none of these numbers will ever really matter". I think there are very few players that are concerned about their stats. The problem with keeping stats is the objectivity. The numbers are subject to whoever is keeping the book. Two opposing teams will have different views of the same play. One book will list an error and the other may call it a hit. And in my experience with this method of each team posting their own stats, I have noticed that every year the numbers are not accurate or thorough. Perhaps each team should keep their own stats for managing purposes and to share with their own team. It is important to track the number of games played and maybe win-loss records for pitchers but anything else will not ever really matter.

We have all played against each other long enough to know who is who. We don't need stats for scouting purposes. We all know who can play without the fictitious stats to prove it. Thanks for listening. See you on the diamond if it ever stops raining. JJ

This is the only point on which I disagree. We do have lots of other people who look at the varying websites for the different divisions and new players do check them out too. Having widely varying statistics is a bad public image and makes the league look like a beer league softball organization. If we aren't going to keep accurate stats we should probably not bother keeping them at all. Or, as Mr. Slice says, keep them for ourselves internally so the individual teams can keep track if they so desire.

I suggest building an ark. The rain has been ridiculous.
