The Twins and Cardinals played a doubleheader under the lights in steamy Kingston last night. With the temperature at 91 the Cards cruised to a 10-1 victory in the first game. Freer picked up a complete game victory surrendering just 1 run while allowing 8 hits. Tom King, making his first start on the mound since an early season shoulder injury, pitched 3 innings giving up 10 runs (7 earned) before giving way to Wayne Nicholson who pitched 3 scoreless innings for the Twins.
In the second game, the Twins took the victory 8-6 banging out 12 hits with Brian Allen hitting a booming triple to the fence in deep, deep right center late while Mike Ruslander lined a timely gapper double in the closing part of the game. Cos DiBari picked up a single laying down a perfect bunt in the 5th and eventually scored. Wayne Nicholson picked up 2 singles and absolutely sparkled at short making numerous fine fielding and throwing plays. John Newman went the distance for the Twins allowing 6 runs, 4 of which were earned. Bouton and Ball with 2 hits each sparked the Cards.
The umpire, Ivan Morales, was the best we have seen this season. Excellent disposition. Excellent sense of the strike zone.
Twins take the regular season series from the Cards 2 games to 1.
