I'd like to thank Jim Bonaparte, Rob Currier, the players and the umpires for everything they did today to get this game in. Upon arrival at C Diamond at 8:45 AM, I found the gate locked and a large pool of standing water at third base. B diamond was even worse. Had to initially call the umpires to cancel the game, then called Rob to see if we could figure something out to get the game in elsewhere. I suggested Bob Moore and Rob went there to check on the field. He said the field needed some work but felt we could get it in there. Rob and I called Jim Bonaparte who was able to secure the field. I called the umpires back and they were both OK with the change in venue even though we had already cancelled. Everyone drove over to Scotia where Rob had already started putting down the diamond dry and getting the field in shape. The umps arrived and we actually started the game before 10:30. It's just a shame we don't have a contact in Schenectady that could give us a courtesy call when they deem the field unplayable. As for the game, the Braves bats came alive and got solid pitching from Mark Denicola and Chris Dunn. Ron Lochner had a big game going 3-3 with a single, double and triple and 5 RBIs against the Cyclones crafty knuckleballer Sherwin So.
1. The Braves for being flexible enough to get the game in when a rain-out should never have been an option on such a beautiful day
2. The umpires for being flexible enough to receive a "cancelled" call to only then receive a call to come back to a different field
3. Scotia-Glenville Babe Ruth for being flexible enough to allow usage of Bob Moore on such short notice
4. Jim Bonaparte for working the phones and securing the field for a pair of teams that he doesn't play for
Such a beautiful day for baseball yesterday and it would have been a crime to not play that game. Hats off to the Braves - that's a good group of ball players who will be a very tough out in the playoffs.
