The Whiz withstood a challenge from a shorthanded (9 players) and bruised Twins team and came away with a 6-2 win at Satellite Thursday evening. The score was 1-0 Whiz after one, who proceeded to score 4 more in the top of the 3rd to make it 6-0. The Twins plated 2 in the bottom of the third with Wayne Nicholsen driving an opposite field double to knock in 2 runs. It would stay 6-2 the rest of the way. Twins threatened in the bottom of the 4th loading the bases with 2 outs but the inning ended with hard hitting Stefan Koutsakis being called out on what was a tough high 3-2 pitch. Or so it looked from my perspective 45 feet away. In the bottom of the 7th the Twins had 2 more hits that put 2 runners in scoring position, but could not quite find the knockout punch. For the Twins, Wayne Nicholsen had a double and pitched an outstanding game allowing 3 earned runs and just 5 balls hit out of the infield. Mike Ruslander continued his torrid hitting with a single and a double. Tom King also added a ground rule double.Catcher Mike Cleary eliminated 2 runners attempting to steal second. And, Cos DiBari got his first base hit of the season with a liner to center. Mike Kane pitched a gutsy game for the Whiz throwing about 100 pitches and benefitted from some fine glove work by fill-in S.S Greg Mangione who also had 2 hits in the game. Jim Porter hit the ball hard more than once but always right at someone.
