Mike Kane allowed a leadoff single to Rich Garbarino, then retired the next 18 Americans as the Whiz Kids won 10-0 in six innings Monday night. Kane struck out six and didn't issue a walk as he kept the batters off balance. The only other ball to leave the infield was Gene Smith's fly to right in the 5th. The Whiz played solid defense, and supplied him with a run in the second. John Cortese doubled, and scored on a groundout by Blaise Agnew. A 4-run third gave Kane insurance runs as Musella, Kane, Buckley and Flansburg drove in runs. They added 2 in the 5th, and 3 in the 6th, but the night certainly belonged to Mike. Glad to be a part of it.
I am considering taking donations from the rest of the 55 teams to send Mike Kane on an all expenses paid month and a half vacation right away.
He deserves it and I think a lot of players might be happy to help out with this.
Seriously though, it's always a pleasure to see another 55er excel. Except against the Twins of course. To quote Yogi Berra (or Casey Stengal ?), "good pitching always beats good hitting and vice versa". Something to remember.
