Giants 4, Peppers 2

I post tonight because the scheduled ump failed to show. In his stead, Herb Carter's son, Jesse, filled in, calling balls & strikes from behind the mound and he deserves a hearty shout out.

Yes, Jesse is Herb's son and Herb was on the opposing team. Jesse is a certified umpire, so I had no reservations about honoring Mike Hart's suggestion that we use him. Glad we did. He umpired a great game - all seven innings in a nail-biting 4-2 Giants win. Jesse hustled to all bases to get proper angles and see any developing plays. Very solid job and we thank him for it. Wish he'd be added to our group of umps.

Meanwhile, Jerry Solomon and Bob Bolt held the Peppers in check until the 7th when they scored two runs and left the bases loaded when we got the final out.

Game was also delayed about 5 minutes when a steady rain barreled through the white lines in the top of the 5th inning, right after the Giants scored 4 in the bottom of the 4th.

Turned out to be a good judgment call by the umpire.

Mark Massaroni saved the Giants with a two-out, bases-clearing double to the gap in right-center to give the Giants their 4-0 lead.

Thank you Jessie Carter for stepping up when our umps didn't show. you were solid and both teams appreciated a great
Great job on your part! Not because we won, but because you volunteered
In a pinch and we're as good as anybody. Peppers gave us all
we could handle. Congrats to the Peppers and pitcher Dan Durback on a
great played game. We only scored in th 4th, when Smaka, Genellis
, and Massaroni came up with clutch RBIs.
I don't know the name of the Peppers 2nd
baseman but he made a few really nice plays to keep it it close
early.

That's kind of you to say that, Jim and Tommy. It was a good game, a taut one, lot of fun.

Our second baseman is Howard Becker. He's playing only his second year of organized ball after about 30 years away. Doing nice job, too.

Story's much the same with our pitcher Dan Durbak, who pitched a complete game, allowing, by our count, only six hits over six innings.

But praise to the Giants, too. Good players all, they just keep coming at you. Never release the pressure. Keeps you awake out there.

-Mike

I was very proud of Jesse, I thought he did an excellent consistent job also. It's a good place for him to be.
