Jim, All I can tell you is that Whiz won 14- 6 over the Damn Yankees and will face the Giants in the finals. All scores are on the 55 site in the headlines box to the right.

jim - got this message from whiz manager jim porter about the whiz- yanks game. sounds like a good game/ sets up a nice finals with the giants. - mike

The Whiz "fell behind 3-0, 4-1, 5-2, before shutting them down and getting big hits up and down the lineup. It ended up 14-6 [Whiz] after the top of the 6th, and they conceded the rest of the game. It was dark, and they didn't think that finishing up on Wednesday would make a difference. Preller went the distance for us. Miller went 4+, Webber finished" for the yanks.

"Now it's on to the finals, starting on Wednesday. Should be a good series. Hope to see you there. Jim "

I'll try to add some details to what was an exciting semifinals.

The Yankees took Game 1 8-4, behind the pitching of John Webber. The Whiz had their worse defensive game all year, and good teams like the Yankees take advantage of those miscues. Mike Aiello and Steve VanGelder each scored 3 runs, and Matt Kelly went 3-4.

The Whiz Kids bounced back to take game 3 by a score of 6-3. In a rematch of game 1 starters, Mike Kane came out on top this time, behind an improved Whiz defense. Kane scored 3 runs, Jim Preller and Reggie Flansburg collected 3 hits each.

It came down to Game 3. Much closer than the final score of 14-6 indicates. The Whiz battled back from 3-0, 4-1, and 5-2 deficits before breaking the game open with 4 runs in each of the 4th and 5th innings. Preller went the distance, while John Cortese went 3-4, and scored 4 runs. The Yankees would never make excuses, they are a proud bunch of guys, but they were hampered by injuries. They suffered another one when Rob Shellhouse injured his arm making a throw from the outfield. Next man up? Billy Kervan! He makes a running shoestring catch to quell a Whiz rally in the 3rd, then hits a booming double to the wall to drive in a run. Speaking with him before the game, I had told him that he had a lot of baseball left in him, and that I hope to see him on the field next year. He's playing in a 70+ tournament soon, along with Brad Buchan. Good luck!

Congrats to Ray Demers, and the rest of the Yankees on a fine season. A great bunch of guys.
