I must take a moment this morning to again Thank my teammates for accommodating my wish to play all 9 positions in one game. We were playing a "meaningless" game in the standings and I asked Don Wixon if he would be gracious enough to allow me to attempt to play all 9 positions in that game.
The game looked like it would be shortened to a 5 inning game, when we jumped out to a 8-0 lead after two innings. That meant that I would need to play multiple positions in multiple innings to pull it off.
It took the efforts of an entire team to make this wish come true, and I appreciate each and every one of them for going along with it. I was able to make plays at 3rd base, short stop, and 1st base on my parade around the diamond. I finished the final inning, catching until there was one out, then took the mound for the final two outs.
The game was a 24 - 3 win for the Marlins, but this guy was the big winner.
The fact that my teammates moved around all night long to accommodate this bucket list item was not lost on me. THANKS GUYS! I will always remember this night!
mike - hooray for you. really. i'm glad the peppers were able to play a small role in your tour of the diamond, and that our two teams will be linked forever in your memory.
that's immortality, if you think about it.
whole point of the game, it seems, is to make those who play it feel good - except, of course, when they leave the field wearing the golden sombrero or getting crushed on the board by double digits. even then though, the results are so ridiculous that the only response has to be laughter.
