Bob Noto lined a 2-out single in the bottom of the 5th to spoil Jim Preller's bid for a no-hitter Monday night. Preller (3-0) had allowed only 2 baserunners via walks up to that point. The first walk occurred in the bottom of the 2nd. Jim Edelman followed with what ordinarily would have been a single, but CF John Cortese scooped it up and fired a strike to second base for the fielder's choice. The Whiz Kids gave Preller plenty of support, scoring 4 1st inning runs after 2 outs, with RBIs coming off the bats of Reggie Flansburg, Cortese, and Blaise Agnew. Preller helped his own cause with a run scoring single in the 3rd, plating Mike Kane, who had doubled. The Whiz added 2 more in the 4th (RBIs from Mike Aveyard and Andy Kramarchyk), and 3 in the 5th (Preller and Agnew delivered again). Now it was just a matter of whether or not the Twins could avoid going hitless. They did, courtesy of Noto (Why did I allow Bob to sub for the Twins? Everyone knows that fella can hit!). After Noto's hit, Preller responded by striking out the next batter. Great job!
