Friday night at the Bob saw a matchup of aces on the mound, with Chris Dunn going for the Cubs and Greg Witalec going for the Braves. The Cubs jumped on Witalec right from the start with 3 runs in the bottom of the first. Bryce Cutler led off with a double. Shawn Maney singled him to third and stole second. Mike Girard followed with a 2 RBI double, stole third base, and scored on a ground out by Ron Lochner, and the Cubs enjoyed a 3 run lead just one out into the game.
The Braves would get one run back in the top of the third, with a lead off walk to Danny Maguire followed by consecutive singles from Marc Trinchillo and Brendan Hogan.
The Cubs would answer in the bottom of the third, with two runs of their own. Shawn Maney again was in the middle of the action with a double, and Ron Lochner added a single.
Meanwhile Chris Dunn was scattering just 4 hits through his 6 innings of work. The Cubs roughed up Witalec for 6 runs on 9 hits in his 4 innings of work.
The Cubs would plate 1 more run in the bottom of the 4th on singles from Ron Massaroni and Jon Martin. They would put the game away in the bottom of the sixth, off of reliever Jim Bonaparte, on 6 hits (singles by Lochner, Massaroni, Martin, and Mike Clary, and doubles from Andy Hoyle and Chris Dunn).
The game saw 15 hits from the Cubs to just 4 from the Braves.
The Cubs move to 9-1 on the season, with a Sunday morning tilt vs the Royals next on tap.
The Braves drop to 6-5 with the loss, and have a meeting with the Chatham Brewers Sunday afternoon.
The Braves are a very talented team, and with Witalec on the mound, they pose a serious threat come playoff time. Good luck to the Braves the rest of the way.
