I want to set this up for those of you not familiar with the 55+ division. The Giants came into this game with a two-season, 33-game winning streak. This year they were 13-0, with almost half of those victories coming by way of the mercy rule. The last place Platinum Marlins were 3-9, with almost half of their losses coming by way of the mercy rule.
Make no mistake, these Giants are loaded!
The Marlins were up first and wanted to get off to a good start, mainly to avoid being victim of another mercy rule job. The Fish put together 5 hits and 3 walks, to plate 6 runs. The Giants flexed a little muscle in the bottom of the inning with 3 hits and 2 runs of their own. When the Giants shut down the Marlins offense in the second and came up with another run, to cut the lead to 6-3, it looked like they would take control of the game from that point on. After all, they had won 33 games in a row!
The Marlins had other ideas. They added 9 runs on 8 more hits and 2 more walks, to push the lead to 15-3. Only at this point did the Marlins players start to believe that this improbable upset could really happen. There was still some fear that this powerhouse of a team could make an historic comeback and burst the bubble, so they kept up the intensity. The Giants added a 4th run in the bottom of the 4th inning, but the Fish added 3 more runs in the top of the 5th (on 4 more hits and a HBP).
When Wayne Newcombe got the Giants out in the bottom of the fifth, without allowing a run, the game was over and the Platinum Marlins had earned an improbable 18-4 victory. The Marlins pounded out an incredible 20 hits and worked 7 walks. Wayne Newcombe led the way with a 4 for 4 night. John Reel, Chuck Stanley, and John Corrigan had 3 hit each. Bill Pelton and Mike Girard added two hits each. An awesome performance against 3 of the divisions best pitchers!
Wayne Newcombe and Mike Girard combined to hold the Giants hitting machine to just 4 runs on 8 hits and just 2 walks.
The Giants were led by Tom Maney, Darrell Duncan, and Tony Nardacci, who had two hits each.
I am extremely proud of this group of players and the effort that they put out on the b-Diamond last night! This was a complete team effort and I can't wait to play again tonight against the Peppers to see what we can do.
