The Marlins pounded out about 104 hits and stole about 66 bases to end the Giants' record 33-game winning streak Tuesday night with an 18-4 mercy-rule win at the "B'' Diamond in Schenectady.
Marlins scored 6 times in the first, but the Giants got within 6-3 before the Marlins scored 9 in the third to bust it open and hand the Giants their first loss in franchise history.
Great win for the Marlins. That may be the team to beat in the playoffs.
When we played the Marlins last week somebody on our Twins team said "this is not the same Marlins we beat earlier this season". They were a hitting machine the second time we played them.
Hats off to this juggernaut that Jimmy K has put together. The accomplishment of winning 33 league games in a row may never be duplicated.
This was truly a huge upset, and the Giants handled the night with the class of a champion. It wasn't an easy night for a team that has done nothing but win since joining the division last year. Losing is always tough, but this was so unexpected, and the Marlins players (including me) were giddy about the result. Facing that disappointment, while your opponents are having the time of their lives is a tough pill to swallow. These Giants were as gracious as could be expected under such circumstances, and I appreciate how they handled such a tough night.
Not to minimize what you say Mike, and I don't say this with disrespect, but losing a baseball game in Albany, N.Y., has never been a hard pill to swallow. Sure, it's fun winning, but this is more about camaraderie and friendships.
Here's a tough pill to swallow: Attending the wake of Dan Dalton (Jim Dalton's younger brother) before our game. To see Dan's very young son in tears as well as his daughter and family, well, that's a tough pill to swallow.
