On a hot and muggy day at New Scotland, the Cubs earned a 18-9 victory over the Yankees.
The Yanks got off to a flying start, by plating 4 runs in the top of the first. Joe Careccia and John Kalinski had the key hits, and the Cubs pitched in with two errors. The Cubs didn't allow the Yanks to enjoy that lead very long, as they answered with 10 runs in the bottom of the first. The Cubs used hits by Mike Girard, Ron Lochner, Jon Martin, and Mike Clary, along with walks to Shawn Maney, Bobby Davis, Andy Hoyle, Chris Dunn, and Ron Massaroni. The inning was capped off by a long home run by Dave Mitchell.
The Yanks closed the gap to 10-6 in the top of the third on a triple by John Haff and a homer by Joe Careccia. Again the Cubs would have an answer. This time, in the bottom of the third, plating six runs, on hits by Chris Dunn, Tom Maney, Jon Martin, Jim McQuade, and Mike Girard.
The Yanks would plate 3 more runs in the top of the 4th, on an error and more hits from Kalinski and Careccia. The Cubs got 2 of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, on a single by Lochner, a double by Massaroni, and a RBI single from Mike Clary.
The Cubs' relievers (Girard and Martin) held the Yanks scoreless over the final 3 innings, and the Cubs would plate just one more run in the bottom of the 6th, to provide the final margin of victory.
The Cubs move to 7-1 with the victory. Next up, a date with the Golden Marlins! This game will feel more like a family reunion, and will be celebrated as such, with a post-game picnic for both sides!
Can't wait!
