After holding on for a narrow 6-5 victory in a 45s game at Satellite today, it became quite obvious that these werent your mothers Cougars that the Marlins were playing.
Frank Montagano has put together a much-improved roster, and they gave us all we could handle. Granted, this is also not yer mamas Marlins either, as there is quite a bit more wear on the tires of some additions to our 2015 roster.
I dont have a scorebook, and am dealing with a near-60 memory, but I can tell you Darrell Duncan did a fantastic job in relief of starter Scott Ross to hold down the fort, and it was a surprisingly clean game considering the infielders were playing on a beach and outfielders were running gingerly on rough terrain. But hey, after a 55s game at Voorheesville HS a few weeks ago, it was a like a field of dreams.
Many thanks for your kind words, Tim. I think the Cougars would agree to a man that it was a rewarding and enjoyable game, despite the final score.
The Marlins have a bunch of guys I first met back in '04, the year I broke in. I've come to know them a little over the last decade, and my fondness for these fellow old-timers grows with every passing year. I always look forward to seeing them on Sundays, and it has been a pleasure and a privilege to play both alongside and against them.
Yes, there may be a few more miles on the Marlins, as Tim points out, but it's been a long time since I've seen a nearly 60-year old second baseman hit a shot as far as the one he hit to center--and into the wind, at that. It killed me that he did it against my team, but I was thrilled to see that majestic blast and happy for Tim, nonetheless.
