The Padres had scored 47 runs in their first four games and the Bears have a pretty short history of suffering some very lopsided defeats so this game was sure to be a Padres run-scoring bonanza, but the Bears newest pitching acquisition led the Bears to their best shot at a win in a very long time.
Rob Bialkowski struck out 9 Padres and allowed only 1 run (1 ER) on 4 hits and 0 walks while striking out 9 - including five K's in the first two innings (one reached base on a WP).
After being sat down 1-2-3 in the first inning, the Bears struck first with a leadoff double in the second by Dean Rowe. The next two hitters would strikeout but Patrick O'Sullivan delivered (just as he did to avoid the disaster in the Reds game) with a single - however, the ball was hit so hard that Rowe could not score; so with runners on 1st and 3rd and two outs, "Big Game" James Morton followed O'Sullivan with an RBI single plating Rowe and the Bears were up 1-0. However, that was it for the run-scoring portion of the Bears offense as Padre pitching held the Bears scoreless the rest of the way while scattering 6 more hits.
The Padres first hit came with two-outs in the 4th inning by Rick DiJohn. He would steal 2B and Dominic LiBassi would drive him home to tie the score at 1-1. However, Bialkowski would hold the Padres to just two more hits all evening: a single in the 5th and a single in the 6th. The Padres did get runners on 2B and 3B in the 5th and the 6th innings (and in the 6th with only 1 out) but Bialkowski got out of each jam with some fine defensive play by the Bears' Austin Blum and Darren Foote.
Padres pitchers Jerry Solomon and Ron Massaroni would combine for a pitching gem of their own and all three pitchers in this game deserved a win, but none would get one.

Up next for the Bears is a matchup with the Yankees at Bob Moore Field on Friday (May 22nd) and the Padres get a long layoff before their next game with the upstart Diamondbacks at Bob Moore Field on Tuesday May 26th.
