the 55 peppers are looking for 12 guys, from the 33 to 55 age divisions, who want to play a modified, skill-centered game on sunday from 2-4:30 at a terrific field.
we've gotten rickey cramer field in catskill for sunday the 12th, when it's supposed to be sunny and 64 degrees. the field should be dry. the rain is supposed to have passed. the forecast calls for cloudy and 50s tomorrow. sun on sunday.
the peppers have 12 guys who've committed to playing.
now, we need about 12 guys who want to play us. we had scheduled a game with the 55 marlins but this afternoon for various reasons, i got a call from the marlins saying that all but two players on the team had to pull out. (those two are invited to sunday's game.)
the town of catskill has given the field to the league for free, though its town clerk did say the town wouldn't mind if we made a donation for upkeep. so i'm asking each guy who does show to consider donating $5, which we'll mail to the town. again, the donation is not mandatory.
here's the deal for sunday:
everybody in our league, except maybe curt tucker, still has winter in his bones, and almost nobody's practiced outside yet. so while we'll play a practice game, the emphasis will be on "practice." guys need to work on the basics now - pitching, hitting, fielding, throwing so once we've warmed up (with bp, fielding drills, etc.), we'll have a modified game.
the key to that game will be to get guys to stretch their baseball muscles, so therell be no stealing and no walks.
catchers will call balls and strikes. if one batter gets a total of 8 balls in one at-bat, then the pitcher has to throw him a cookie down the middle.
that way the pitcher gets the chance to work on throwing strikes, the batter gets a chance to see and swing at one, and, if he connects, something happens, which can only benefit the batter and the fielders. we'll all have 100 days this summer to play real games. might as well try to go into them with skills sharpened.
after the game, one of our players, a catskill native, knows some good, reasonably priced eateries in catskill where we all can stop for food if we like.
also, if you want to see what rickey cramer field looks like, google "rickey cramer field images."
it's 33 miles from albany to catskill. i'm asking my guys to try to be there by 1:30. i'll be there by 1.
directions: thruway south to exit 21 catskill. take a left at the light after toll onto route 23b. go under the overpass approximately 1.5-2 miles. rc babe ruth field on left. sign at entrance. my cell if you need to call me on sunday: 441-1306.
if you want to play, please email me at mhart44@me.com. first 12 are in. i'll reply to each email. thanks, guys.
