... Jerry Solomon, who is in his 60s, has been selected to represent the Padres in the 33+ Division All-Star Game.
Jerry plays for the 45 Marlins and 55 Giants and has had a lot of success pitching in national tournaments over the years in Florida and Arizona.
Anyone in their 60s who can still be successful in a 33 Division (and each team is allowed four 30-32-year old players) deserves a pat. Outside of Randy Craft, I don't know anyone in their 60s who can still play with the "kids'' or of anyone who has in years past.
Thanks for the kudos Jimmy. Just having a ball playing with my son, and the Padres are a great bunch of guys to go to battle with. Just hope the roll continues
as i've asked gerry hawkins (70 this year) and billy kervan (69) and now i'll ask jerry solomon: what do you guys eat for breakfast? got to get me some of that.
but so far, nobody's spilled the beans.
hey, just thought: how 'bout if we have "geezer of the year" award? we could give it to guys who play as old as they feel not as old as they are. (so would that mean some guys in their 30s win it if they're playing like they're 70? nah. they're just having creaky days, that's all. they have 30, 40 more years to go.)
oh, and we could name the award after ex-braves second-baseman red rudlowicz (who played, last i knew, till he was 74. i met his son at the guilderland y this winter: said his dad was still skiing at about 78 or 79. way to go red!)
i'll close with a quote that many of you know from satchel paige, who pitched for the cleveland indians when he was 59:
"how old would you be if you didn't know how old you are?"

Mike Can we give the "Old Geezer" award to guys in the 33 div? See a lot of "young" guys playin like old geezers in that division too.How bout the young Old Geezer award?
By the way, ever have a catch with Solomon? Wears your hand down.
Well said by all. For that matter we all deserve a little credit for still hauling our sorry old bodies out to inflict more damage all summer.
I have an interesting story about Red ..... i used to be a pretty hard core skier before it started costing $100 a day to go .... now i haul myself a mile out on Lake George in below zero weather and catch Lake Trout.
Hunter Mountain down in the Catskills has a backside to it called Hunter West that has some really really steep trails and is very challenging to say the least. I was skiing it late spring about 7 years ago and it was end of the season with bare spots and all that. So it was steep and nasty and not much snow ... just the way i love it.
Don't you know i run into Red about half way down one of those trails ..... and boy could he ski!
Of note, Jerry was certainly in the mix to have been selected by his teammates to represent the Padres, but AS manager Eric Kohls beat us to it and selected GL Jerry with one of his three pitcher picks.
Keep chuckin' #7!

Jerry is a freaking freak of nature. 60 or 62 I don't even know, but he is winning games against 30 year olds. He only has one semi functionally working knee, but he will battle until he puts his team in a position to win.
Some facts you may not know about Jerry. He may be a more talented musician than ballplayer. (Bass guitarist with Fat and Bad) Obliviously genetically blessed to perform at this level while holding an AARP card, but Jerry works on his craft 12 months a year and works harder than anybody I know to be the best he can be.
Nice to see him get the opportunity to play with his son and be recognized as an all star to boot !
