Anthony Torre hit a grand slam in the top of the 5th to rally the Whiz Kids to an 11-9 victory over the Peppers Tuesday night. The Whiz Kids built a 5-1 lead after 4 innings, but a plethora of errors opened the floodgates, and the Peppers took full advantage to grab a 9-5 lead after 4. In the decisive 5th, Brian Musella singled, John Cortese was hit by a pitch, and Chris Abrams walked to set the stage for Torre, who launched a shot deep to left. Porter scored the eventual game winner when he followed Torre's blast by reaching on an error, stole 2nd and 3rd, and scored on an error. The Whiz added an insurance run in the 6th as Musella collected his 3rd single of the game, stole second, and later scored on a sac fly by Abrams. Other big contributors for the Whiz were Harry Ferguson (2 singles, 2 runs, 2 steals, 1 RBI), Dennis Buckley (single and double, stolen base, 1 run), and Joe Fusaro (2 singles and an RBI). Abrams went 5 innings on a hot, humid night, allowing only 2 earned runs. Buckley pitched a scoreless 6th for the save. Among the offensive leaders for the Peppers were Vince Koster, Paul Post, Mike Hart, and Bill Gannon. Jim Porter-Whiz Kids
The replay of the game showed that Brian Musella had scored on a wild pitch before Torre's blast. It was a 3-run shot, not the grand salami. Still dramatic, still brought us even in the game. Jim Porter Whiz Kids
