At the CDMSBL Board meeting on Friday night they voted to move up the declaration date to Oct 31. of each year. so anyone wishing to move is now required to inform his Manager, your Commissioner, and League President before this date. All other features of player movement remain in effect.
Quick question??? Other than word of mouth how can Managers/GM's find out who is looking to play somewhere else? As a Manager/Gm in the 35's it would be nice to who is looking to play on a different team...Thanks!!!!
As manager/Gm of the 35's Yankees It has been told to me that everyone is a free agent at the end of the season anyways.. I send an email to my guys telling them that everyone is able to investigate options for the up coming year and are free agents if they so do to choose to leave to go to another team. Typically they send an email back stating they aren't leaving. I am confused that this was suddenly changed at the meeting just recently, and since I wasnt there I dont have an understanding of why if someone can elaborate it would be helpful I am sure to ALL the managers I am sure thanks Lex
Guys were waiting until the last day to notify their managers, leaving them short come February when most teams have already started working out. It seems that most knew they were leaving a lot sooner, but chose to wait to notify their managers.
Guys come and go as they please anyways, many times during the year guys get disgruntled because they arent playing alot of innings, I hear of guys in the 35s who are typically unhappy with the way their coach is using them and ask me if I have room on my team SO it is a catch 22, if guys leave a team , there must be reason why. As for making a super team? I dont have an issue with it, it is really no different than Jj and SHook Day and Novak and Burns haha on the dodgers so nothing you can do about it they are some of th best pitchers in the league how can we just say JJ IS ON ONE TEAM SHOOK ON ANOTHER MAZZERONI ON ANOTHER AND LOUNELLO ON ANOTHER doesnt work that way guys choose to play with each other and as long as the league gets their money why should they interfere with it. Just makes managers look for guys coming up in the 18/25s who are as good as those guys and hopefully they dont get picked up by the dodgers. Parity is a nice option but typically not a reality. We as managers have 15-20 guys on our rosters hard to juggle so many personalities and if guys want to leave and form new teams so be it, because teams fold all the time, whether it is because they just decide to move on or whether guys on the team leave to form new teams. All i know is people get mad that guys leave there team because they feel as if they were wooed away , I was asked CONSTANTLY during the year to leave the 45 yankee team and come to other teams, so isnt that recruiting as well? Of course teams want to add guys on their own teams from other teams especially talented guys but it is like the pot calling the kettle black dont get mad when it comes back around and happens to your team , I know that the teams always want to be competitive and if I wanted to leave and go to another team than that should just be my choice and not dictated by a previous team that would be vindictive again it is a recreation league and guys want to play with guys they have fun with,..

DP - you make an excellent point...This is a terrible change to the "free" agency rule I wrote some 4 years ago. Once again, players are being controlled, unnecessarily in my opionion, in a league where we PAY TO PLAY..probably to assuage the fears of a SMALL group of managers, who probably lack the communication skills to be a manager in the first place.
To those managers, instead of having till Feb 1st to adjust your roster, you now need to get it done in four weeks..from the current pool of players...BRILLIANT move..!
To DP's point...Let's say on Jan 20th, a couple of NEW players want to join a team, play in our league...turns out they are pretty good ball players...So Mr. manager..what are YOU going to do for good 'ole DP, who you made commit to you back in October? Cut his playing time? Let him go to try and find another team so "late" in the year?
If you are a manager in this league, and by Feb 1st you know EXACTLY who is or isn't coming back, and you STILL can't get a team together by the start of the season, my advice is to step down from that position IMMEDIATELY, for the good of the league...
The system wasn't broken...but lets "fix" it anyway...
I don't think there is a good way to leave a team. No matter what, there will always be some feelings hurt and in a lot of cases, inuendo and hyperbole to follow. In reality you have be truthful to yourself and play where you want to play,(of course it helps when the team wants you too.) Secondly, I don't think it takes a very much to declare free agency, no matter if it's Oct or Feb. OK so I think you know in Oct, you don't want to be back in the spring.
As far as managers who are less than communicative, I think there certainly is room for them as well as our most boisterous. What was Charlie Manual saying? Who cares, he got the job done. Casey Stengel? Talked a lot, but not very communicative..
That being said, the real issue for managers is how you go through the year with a solid group of guys only to find out that managers on other teams have been wooing these players to join them. I know you can't force people to stay, but can there be a separate code of ethics for managers? How bout managers from the team that the player wants to go to,have to let the existing managers know that they have interest in their player(s) This might give the existing manager a chance to talk the player(s) back to his team, without being blindsided. Maybe we should have a no tamper ordinance, like football, when a team needs a head coach, but the coaches team is still playing. I don't know.
Players could leave a team any time they wanted - offseason or inseason - they just had to ask their manager for permission to leave. I know of only one instance in 14 years where a player was told no and challenged it. The only caveat is that rosters have to be frozen on July 1 till the end of the season.
Also, stipulations in the former rule were that a team could take no more than 3 players from within the division and no more than one from any given team. This prevents 3,4,5 stud players from leaving one team to form a superpower with another. This no longer has anything to do with wanting to play with their "friends.'' If that were the case, we'd have maybe 3 teams in all of CDMSBL.
Yes, we pay to play. But we have to govern the chaos somehow. We lost one very good team a few years back becasue of this new free-for-all rule. If, and I say IF, the rumors were true that 3 players from a top team were leaving for another for 2014, four teams would have been affected. As it is now, we may lose 1 team because of this rule and possibly a 2nd. You might say this rule is in the best interest of the players, but it's not in the best interest of the teams and the GMs who bust their collective asses so you all can still play baseball.
Let's be smart about it and not chase teams/guys out of the league.
Jon. As I understand, this decision was not made by the managers. It was made by the board that we voted in last week. I as a manager was not asked about it. So lets not group all managers together. Managing a team is a tough job to do. In fact, if a manager told his team, I am done. Will someone please step up to take over. The chance is very slim someone from the team would. I have no real opinion, either way on the subject. As long as we all live by the same rules. Just like a manger, being a board member, takes a lot of time. So I guess while we don't agree with every decision. We did elect them as board members. As Ralph said, to me if someone told me later, then sooner. As long as I have the numbers, why in the world would I want to keep him..
This isn't about what Jim K calls the "studs" of the league, whoever they are...DP raised a legitimate point...this should be a two way street..As a manager you want to know who is coming back, and , I assume you are working to improve your team. Players should know if they have a spot for the next season as well..So, managers should guarantee playing time for a player by Oct 31st as well...
Course, that is not realistic...and I'm sure won"t happen,..and as far as "chasing" players out of the league, I've got a HUGE laundry list of guys who no longer play in this league...for a variety of reasons...
Guess I'm just a union guy when it comes to this...
All I hear about is free agency and declaration and this topic has been discussed over and over for many, many years with no solution. At this point using the October 31st deadline should not be instituted this year because it hasn't given players enough time to decide what they want to do. This should have been instituted at least 4 months ago to give everyone both managers and players to notice that this rule will be in effect. Start it next year.
In reality, all players are free agents and most managers know who wants to leave or have encouraged players to leave for a variety of reasons. This is not the real issue.
The real issue is teams start raiding players from other teams and usually they go to the stronger teams who already have pipelines to the 35 + division and in some cases the Twilight League.
The disparity is getting worse each year and the proponates to keep status quo are the ones who have the pipeline and the others don't have the contacts or relationaships in the other league to bring the good players in.
The result of all this is many blowout games that end in 5 innings when we pay to play 7 innings and both teams have a bad taste in their mouths because of it. If your a decent player this is not fun and we will lose many players who are discouraged.
I know Wayne Newcomb recently posted on the bulletin board his concerns and rightfully so. I have been in this league from it's inception in 1989 and I have seen it grow, but if you really want to look carefully at this many of the same ballplayers have been around for years and the proportion of new players who have stayed has been dropping. This doesn't bode well for future growth. We move sideways ...adding 55 division now and talk of a 60+ division. What's going to happen with the 35 and 45 divisions. Will they go by the wayside as the 25+ division.
If the board and all the managers and players are trully concerned about the health of the league and it's growth then everyone must bite the bullet and accept some sort of draft which allows existing teams to keep maybe 6 players and the rest go in a draft with new free agents and new players entering the league.
Forget the bickering about free agency .... it will always exist. For the good of this league that I have been proud to be in ....let's do something about parity, having fun playing the game and complete the games.
Man I haven't written this much since my theses in college!!
I agree with Johnny Martin, leave it alone!!!!! Implement all of these elaborate plans gradually after checking with Managers/GM's and getting a perspective from these gentlemen. Everyone wants to play but the reality is it doesn't always work out! Guys want to play where they are comfortable and sometimes you move around! Sometimes you find a team where you fit in great!
I agree with Mario leave it alone every player is a free agent at season end anyways , doing a draft and having guys play on teams which they may not know guys as well as others or trying to get parity is not realistic by making up teams like in gym class. it will Be like going out to dinner paying a 200.00 bucks for the cook to make you what he wants you to eat , haha
Tap the brakes guys. Players can still move on from their teams after November 1st, however need to notify their manager and gain their release. If the manager refuses to grant the release, the player still has recourse to appeal that decision.
Just like JR said, the date moved but all other features of player movement remain in effect.
I think this got off track a little bit...this isn't about the players who leave, or how they leave, it is more about the players that are staying.
Again, to DP'S original point...the board has, in my opinion put managers in a tough spot..you are asking players to declare by Oct. 31st, their intentions for the following season...So, Nov. 1st you have a roster of COMMITTED guys....How does a manager then go out and try and improve his team if he so desires?
He probably has to bring in new players to do this...correct? Whose spot do they take? What happens to those guys?, the ones that committed to you..?
I think managers should extend the same curtesy to the players, and let them know by the same date, whether they are wanted back or not, so they have an opportunity to explore their options, and not get"chased" away when someone better comes along.
That was the only point I was trying to make..which I obviously didn't do very well...

Exactly Jon, managers want to know who is coming back. If they aren't told till Feb. 1 that they aren't, that's kinda late to recruit and have the money in my March 1.
Listen, we can beat this to death. There are pros and cons to all of it.
We need to listen to the full membership, the GMs/managers, Board members and try to do what's best for CDMSBL, not individuals.
Whateve conclusions are reached, we'll be damned one way or the other.
I totally agree Jon. Managers definitely should release players by Oct. 31 so they have time to search for another team. No doubt about it. Or, managers should in the very least explain what he sees each player's role will be with the team for the following year. But, there are pros and cons to that as well. Again, damned one way or the other.
If it's true that the reason we get to play baseball in this league is because of how much ass is busted by the general managers, then why are these fellas not recognized for their outstanding contributions to not only this organization, but may I say the whole of society for keeping this bunch off the streets for at least once sometimes twice a week.
So thanks guys, you all are doing great work.

How will anyone know of this rule change if they don't look on the forums? I think it can be implemented for next year, but doing it after the season makes it difficult to get the word out.
Before I go any further let me say that because of back fusion surgery I am having this Monday, I am off all my normal meds. Not only does this create great anticipation on what the next moment will bring me, but it also opens the floodgates to a mess of scata that I usually keep inside. All you backtalking trash mouthed, foul, evil breath smelling toad licking fungus jawed dingo's are warned. You bring yer s#*&t on this website, I got nothing to do all day but break down your pitiful attempts at witty reparte.

I love you either way. Though the non-med Pete seems to be even MORE entertaining. I thought that was an impossiblity. I have been corrected.
Keep singin', brother. We are listening.

Thanks Pete! But uh, who beat you for the best hair award last year??? Musta been Donnie Ball ~ had to be!
Pete, keep writing and don't hold back anything Buddy. I just had the misfortune to spend a few days in a hospital bed myself and I can tell you no matter how much you kick and scream the nurse only brings the morphine around when the Dr (really the computer) allows her to. Best of luck with the surgery !

PS Pete, know any good lawyers?

Pete; Best of luck with the upcoming surgery. You survived knee replacement, you will blow thru this back fusion with a yawn.
Love the Miss Relihan reference (our 6th grade teacher) Pete also won a 1964 Mr. Sullivan "The Dude Abides" award. I don't know about the rest of the league, but I take comfort in that.
