A tip of the cap to a good bunch of guys that showed up for the Cyclones today. They hung in and fought hard for every pitch of both games inspite of being blown out in both games 21 - 0 and 28 -1.
They were up against it from the start, as the Marlins were looking to tune up for a quarterfinal match-up with the Royals. The bats for the Marlins were in high gear right from the first inning of game one, as the Fish put up a 5 spot. The fish followed it up with 8 runs in the second, and the rout was on. The Marlins finished the game with 21 hits and 21 runs in just four trips to the plate. Phil Gadomski and Mike Girard limited the Cyclones to just 2 hits and a walk in the game one shut out. Tim Brown had two singles, a double, and 3 RBIs. Dave Mitchell had two doubles and 3 RBIs. Jim McQuade added 2 doubles, a single, and 3 RBIs. Jim Ansel had 3 singles and 4 RBIs; and Tommie Smith had 2 doubles and a single and 3 RBIs as well.
Game two was more of the same, as the Fish got 6 runs in the first, 2 in the second, and 4 more in the 3rd inning on the way to a 28 - 1 triumph. Girard and Gadomski again shut the Cyclones out for their 4 innings on the hill. The Cyclones one run came in the 5th inning off of Bob Coffey, in his first appearance on the hill. That inning started with an error on the shortstop (yours truly) and the third baseman. Bob then walked two batters to plate the one run, but got a strike out and two short fly balls to left to end the game. Dave Mitchell again was a beast, as he added his 3rd and 4th doubles on the day, and a grand slam home run, totaling 7 RBIs in the game. Tom Maney had 3 hits and 3 RBI's; Mike Girard had 4 hits and 5 RBI's; Phil Gadomski had 3 hits; Bob Coffey added 4 hits and 3 RBI's; and John Reel added 3 hits in the 23 hit attack for the Marlins.
The Golden Marlins next face the 3rd seed Royals in a double header next Saturday, at the Satellite field, in the quarter finals.
