Billy the Kid Kervan continued his dominance on the mound with a no-hitter and Matt Kellys scorching hot bat produced three more hits and a monster home run as the Yankees defeated the Peppers in a shortened 5-inning affair at Central Babe Ruth last night.
Kervan faced the minimum 15 batters in registering his second straight complete game. His only blemish was hitting Mike Hart with a pitch in the fourth inning, but quickly erased him when second baseman Mike Matheson snared a line drive off the bat of Artie Gianakis to double up Hart and add a little salt to the Peppers wound.
Meanwhile, Kelly continued to wield a hot bat with a perfect tri-fecta: three at bats, three hits and three runs scored. He topped off his evening with a fence-clearing two-run homer to right-center in the top of the fifth. John Weber kept his extra-base hit streak going with a double and triple, while Ray Demers added a single and double, and Joe McNally and Jim Ansel were each 2-for-2 with run-scoring hits.
The win boosts the Yankees record to 8-5-1 as they take on the first place Cards tonight in the regular season finale.
