Ok, so everyone knows that Donnie Dunham is a newly elected Hall of Famer in the league right? And that his tireless contributions to the league off the field are well known also? But guess what, you do need to be able to play a little ball to get into the Hall and boy did he play some ball yesterday!
On a scorcher at the newly revamped Satellite field, including a new fence, Donnie single-handedly provided all the punch the Yankees needed against a formidable new team, the Braves. First with the scoreless pitchers duel brewing in the 4th, the Braves had runners on 1st and 3rd w/only 1 out... That is until they hit a liner up the middle which Yankee ace Darrin Ambridge deflected with his glove only to see Donnie make a GREAT adjustment and shift with the deflection to get the ball on one hop and start a 4-6-3 to end the threat and keep the game scoreless...
Next, the Braves busted the pitchers duel open with a 4 spot in the top of the 5th. After the inning started with an innocnet ground out, they then capitalized on consecutive walks and a catchers interference call to load the bases before getting a couple big hits to plate the runs... So down 4-0 and reeling a little, this is where Hall of Famer Dunham began to earn his new nickname... Following a single and ball lost in the bright sun which dropped for another hit, Donnie hit a towering Home Run DEEP past the fence line (there is no actual fence in LF as yet, not sure why, but it cleared the fence line by at least 25-30 feet), and all of sudden it was a 4-3 game and breathed life back into the Yankees!
And so, that's only the BEGINNING of the story... And no, this does not end like the Mighty Casey at the Bat (spoiler alert)! In the bottom of the 6th the Yankees managed to get a run all on their own w/out the newly elected Hall of Famer, as we squeezed one across as benefit of a Brave error and a Rich Royka double that made it hurt and tied the game at 4...
Then guess who stepped to the plate with the score tied, 2 outs, and the winning run on 2nd? Yep, Mr Dowtown fresh off his blast n the previous AB... So after battling to a 3-2 count, including 4 foul balls as he fought off good pitches, guess what happened next??? Yep, ANOTHER eyepopping blast off his HOF bat that again easily cleared the fence line as he went downtown yet again and gave his Yankees club their first lead of the game going into the last inning...
The top of 7 was fairly uneventful though the Braves did get a 2 out single, but Darrin k'd the next batter and Donnie "Downtown: Dunham had singlehandedly christened the new "would-be fence" in LF as not sure what would have transpired if this game was a week earlier ~ but it wasn't! And Don showed how a guy with some grit and determination can carry his team when they are down, and boy did he ever...
Plus I'd also add that the Braves are a fine team and building a good nucleus to a CDMSBL franchise as they would have won this game were it not for one old time Hall of Famer... So yeah the old meets the new in some ways and it was an honor to be a part of and witness the heroics of the Yankee 2B as it's not very often you get to see a guy carry a team like that... Jaw dropping I tell ya, just jaw dropping... Or is jawdropping one word??? hmmm...
Awesome job Double D..!! Save some hits for Maine!!
The new fence has already made this field so much more interesting...!
We may need to look into a way of securing the bottom a little bit as balls can roll under pretty easily as evidenced in the REDS/BLUE JAY game.
Jonny
Great work on field Petey G. & co. !! Of course Joey Burns inherited a 4 inch hole in front of rubber when he took the ball for the 3:30 game, apparently not all got the memo to not dig it up...
Congrats to the Yankees and Donald Herman Ruth...that was a fun game for 5 innings for us Braves.lol Actually that was a good baseball game and I was really proud of my Braves for battling thru that heat with only 9 guys.Good luck the rest of the way Yanks..... Mark
