The Dodgers and Braves faced off Sunday at Swift Road
Despite the final score the Braves played a great baseball game .... error free (maybe 1? ... our book isnt the greatest) and very competitive through most of the game.
Darrell Duncan pitched for the Dodgers and Mark DeNicola (Denicola?) pitched for the Braves. Dodgers scored 3 in the top of the first inning on a Hicks single and stolen base followed by an RBI double by Tony Parella and a bomb over the left field fence by Nick Kanellis.
Darrell was at his very best yesterday and had all of his pitches working, velocity and pinpoint control. Mark settled down as well and the score remained at 3-0 through 4 innings. During that time Mark threw three straight 1-2-3 innings and Darrell allowed a single in the 2nd and a single in the 3rd which would be the only hits he gave up all day and turned in a 3 strikeout performance in the 4th.
The Dodgers struck again in the 5th starting with a leadoff HR from Parella. After the next two batters were retired Corrigan starts a 2 out rally with a BB and a stolen base. A Duncan single (almost a great catch by the Braves SS) scored the second run of the inning. Newcomb singled and stole second to put two runners on base and Bob Altobelli ripped a line drive single to plate both runs and put the Dodgers up 7-0.
Duncan strikes out the leadoff batter then walks the next guy before a 4-6-3 double play ends the inning.
Dodgers then put the game away in the 6th. After a leadoff groundout Hicks and Sohl single and Parella walks to load the bases. Hicks scores on a past ball, Sohl scores on a Kanellis groundout, Parella scores on a Caputo single, Caputo scores on a Corrigan single, Corrigan scores on a Duncan single, Duncan scores on a Newcomb single. Bob Altobelli then lines one off the fence in right for the final hit of the inning.
Parella comes on and closes the game without allowing a hit. Duncan ends up allowing 2 hits in 5 innings while striking out 7. I have never seen Darrell pitch better.
Offensively the Dodgers were led by Parella 2-2, HR, 2B, Kanellis HR and two hits each from Hicks, Duncan, Newcomb and Altobelli.
