The last time the WhizKids and Yankees squared off, The Yankees scored the winning run in the bottom of the 8th to win 5-4. Wednesday's game had the look of another low scoring affair, with Jim Konstantakis and Billy Kervan as the starting pitchers. However, Matt Kelly's single off the 1st base bag to start the game was just the beginning of a wild back and forth contest. The Yankees scored 5 runs in the 1st, highlighted by Steve VanGelder's 2-run double to left. The WhizKids answered with 4 in the bottom of the frame, with Billy Smith, Anthony Torre, and Jim Porter collecting RBI. Smith put the Whiz ahead 6-5 in the 2nd with a 2-run single, scoring Ed Draves and Tom Maney. The Yankees came storming back with 5 runs in the 3rd to retake the lead at 10-6, with RBI from VanGelder, Jim Ansel, Joe Hervieux, and Bob Noto. The WhizKids tie it at 10 with a 4-run 4th, RBI from Ralph Caputo, Mike Lannon, and Anthony Torre. In the 5th, the 1st 6 WhizKids batters all scored, on RBI off the bats of Darrell Duncan, Caputo, Smith, and Jeff Teats. They closed the scoring in the 6th with 4 more runs.
