The 2-Time defending champion Dodgers showed why they have won it all the past 2 years, as they turned 5 double plays in a 9-3 win over the Highlanders last night. Yep, that's right, F-I-V-E double plays in one game, more then some teams turn the whole year... And they did it in the first 6 innings of the game to boot!
Andy Sardella pitched a very nice 5 innings to induce 4 of those dp's, with the best double play combo in the league Mick Novak (also the coolest manager/GM in the league too!) and Joe Burns each starting one and being the pivot on the other. No pun intended!
Mick hit a bomb, Lalo Reyes hit one too, and I know Joe and Ryan had hits in the mix (as they usually do), as well as Mike Burns and Andy helped himself with a couple... Scott Bonnano also had a big 2 run double to break the 2-2 tie in the 4th before they broke it open in the 5th...
On our end, Jeremy Barnes pitched a good 4 innings and was the victim of some Highlander errors, including a costly throwing e by me which I am kicking myself over... He was also the highlight of the offense as he hit a BOMB down the RF line which would've been a dinger in most parks, but with no fence at Burnt Hills HS, he had to leg out... And uh well, he didn't quite make it as he gave outta gas coming around third and into home as Carlos (also had a hit, maybe 2?) tagged him out at the plate to end the game...
We'll give the Dodgers a better game next time for sure, but they deserve all the credit and showed why they are the Champs... As balanced as the 35's is this year, they are still the 2-time defending champs with only 1 controversial loss this year, so clearly still the team to beat, and even though I think we and ALL of the other teams in the 35's CAN do it this year, we haven't!!!
Damnit!
PS ~ And I also want to say a Big Thank You to Wayne Newcomb for helping us out and filling in as we had several guys out due to the severe storms and other work/family obligations. It was nice to get to know him a little more personally after seeing him around for a few years... Awesome guy and also colleagues with our 3 time All-Star Bill Hamel (who had a couple hits yesterday and is getting back on track btw) as they've known of each other for years but never formally met until yesterday. Very cool...
