I think that perhaps the home team should be responsible for submitting "official" stats. Let the umpires resolve disputes on errors, base hits, etc. when they come up. Everybody knows that too many of the stats. that get posted are hallucinations. But the trick here is to ensure that whoever keeps the book during the game knows what how to do it correctly. A lot of people do not.
Jim, Letting one team be reponsible for stats will open a whole can of worms. Remember, stats are not mandatory. So by each team doing their own, the only issues would be between the scorekeeper and players of that team. The opposing teams really don't care what you have in your book, as long as the total runs and win or lose is correct.
So how does it get figured who has the highest batting average in the league for the season ? I think I recall seeing there was something noting certain best in league accomplishments after the seasons were over. Thanks.
Here is what we have for our season plan in the 35's. This is what the managers are supposed to do...
In theory, if everyone follows through with this little bit of extra effort, then stats should be pristine.
Game reporting is mandatory. The minimum report will be score, and players who attended and played in games. Individual statistics are not required but teams who do not submit will have their players ineligible for post-season awards. These reports will be given in excel spreadsheet and uploaded by the 35 div. web master, the report will be sent to the Commissioner , the Web Master and to the Opposing Mgr. The opposing mgr. has this one chance to reconcile differences in scorebooks. The report is due within four days after the game. The Web Master will compile the official standings from these submissions.
I think that forcing the umpires to decide what a hit and what an error is goes beyond their job duties. I'd rather them focus on making sure they get the best possible call - not whether player X should have a hit or not.
Gentleman, what I have learned through my years of coaching and playing is that players do care about their stats. What seems to have worked over the years is that teams do a quick reveiw of scorebooks together at games end.We may not always see eye to eye over somes plays but there is always a couples close ones so we say (ok you have that one and we get that on?) I can't imagine at our ages we don't see this game pretty much the same through our tired and bloodshot eyes..... Mark DeNicola(Braves)
Putting names to errors and keeping track will go a long way towards cleaning up the stats. It's too easy to give a nameless error for the defensive team - it helps pitchers' ERA as well.
That's a pretty good idea Mark, I like it... Not sure what happens when the managers disagree, as they surely will, but it'd be a good start... And yeah, I absolutely agree with that too Rob about putting errors to names as that would help a LOT...
I noticed that when I started doing it and was the ONLY one doing it though, 2 things... 1) It was very time consuming... 2) And it still didn't match up because the other team had something differently...
So getting managers to agree to put the time and effort necessary into doing this is the catch, especially considering I see many managers just overlook it all together... And well, I started falling off when I saw others weren't doing it as again, it is very time consuming and it's not just reconciling with other managers, but your players whining about even obvious things is also tiresome...
Anyways, you're right ~ it could be done and all us managers would just have to man up and do it, that's all...
I just don't see the managers all agreeing to do it as again, it's a little bit of work and then there's the headaches that go along with it... So we'll see, but I'm not holding out much hope at this juncture...
And oh yeah, helluva a play last night man!!! Textbook!
Rob said it all very eloquently... Thanks Highlander, I always liked you even before you were a Highlander...
The only thing I'd add is that Girrard has specifically and directly belittled me here and yet ONLY I received a "warning." You seriously think that's ok on ANY level? And is there ANY precedent for this whatsoever, because I do NOT read a single word in the COC where the words bulletin board or internet are even remotely referred to, much less stated directly... Such a broad interpretation is quite frankly not only ludicrous, but will never stand up in court...
And quite frankly, I want transparency, NOT the behind closed doors nonsense where a select few are in control of ~ and we all know where the marching orders come from... So yeah, I'm going to add that it's favoritism shown on who you play word police for here with your pal Girrard given free reign of terror and anyone who dares question you, him, or anyone else in your little marlin clique, then gets threatened???
And all right here in the good ole' USA, imagine that... And so what league would you "fine and suspend me in" anyways??? You want to kick me out because I voice the obvious which everyone in the league talks about???
Wow... Seriously, just wow...
So go ahead, try and suspend me and let's see what happens because I'm pretty darn sure it wouldn't be the wisest of ideas on your part... But that's just some "friendly advice," you will do as you will... And I will do as I will...

Stats are not mandatory in this league . We offer their posting and compilation only as an added benefit. The Divisions each have the same protocol as 35+ commissioner Tom Smith outlined above. It can be done at the field or online. Most if not all differences have been errors in book keeping entries not how a play is actually scored though with some discussion even those have been reconciled. And by the way players openly accusing other teams of stat padding is not a proper use of this medium. complaints of such , and any other complaint, can go thru your manager and to the commissioner. I remind all the COC applies to this Board as well as the playing field and area around it. If a division wants to expand the stats reporting to be mandatory and to include defensive play as well that is totally up to that division and can be decided during the off-season. Respectfully disagree on the scoring discrepancies, John. They were NEVER resolved in the three years I did the stats for the 35+ division. I received flack from every team for the way the stats appeared on the website and was told more than once that if I wasn't going to score the games correctly I shouldn't bother doing it at all. On top of that, if the league wants to hand out awards based on on-field play, wouldn't statistics actually help ensure that the awards are not subjectively handed out? It's the center of a great deal of angst with a lot of players - I got to hear it more than anyone due to my position as website administrator and it's THE reason I'm not doing it anymore. Without veracity, no need to do it at all - might as well perpetuate the rumor that everyone talks about how the league shows favoritism.
As for carrying out insults and accusations on the Bulletin Board, I agree. However, if you want to say stats aren't mandatory anyway, you can't very well complain that people are upset about awards handed out based upon achievements where stats are used and not checked. That makes no sense.
