Congratulations to Tom Maney for coming up clutch in his final game of the season to win the 45+ batting title by just 4 percentage points over John Corrigan!!! All three base hits were line drives, with the final one being a walk-off, inside-the park, home run. Congrats my friend!!!
Another great race in the 45s. Mark Dabney took a .600 average thru 11 games into the final game of the season, but went 0-for and fell to .562. Mr. 22 never ceases to impress. Tom was at .568 entering that last game.
Mr. Maney, as he is called by his Marlins teammates, would get my impartial vote for 45s MVP (if I had one). Not only was he the best table-setter in the league (17 runs scored and 14 SB's), but he had 16 RBI from the leadoff spot to boot. He's da' man!
I too want to offer my congrats to a fine man and great competitor as yep, he earned it with another nice game... Which just for the record he even roped an 0-1 curve down the line to open the game and essentially set the table for the shellacking the Marlins put on us from there... Really, it was not that easy of a pitch to hit (err, well, maybe it was for some) and he smoked it, kicking up chalk and rolling all the way under the fence in the corner...
Great guy and great season... And also congrats to John and Mark as they are as well ~ and I LOVED John's post... Plus it coincides and I do not think is an accident that each of the top 3 seeds had a top hitter in the batting avg. race and well ~ the 45 playoffs are definitely going to be FUN!
I've always enjoyed playing against Tommy, though maybe not the results...
But I've had the pleasure, and the honor, of taking the field with him in the same jersey this year. I not only got to marvel at his accomplishments, but watching his preparation made me a better ballplayer (though some days it didn't show). He doesn't just show up, unload his bag, and take his place. Total commitment to excellence.
congrats to those three and really four if you count Mash, last years batting titlist. all had that last game chance to win it. and notably Mr. Dabney chose to play injured rather than "sit" on his incredible .600 average going in. The close race here just echos the tighter games and standings race we have all witnessed this season. playoffs will be fun. good luck all around. jreel
Having been a teammate of Mr. Dabney's a long time ago, I was not surprised when I heard that he chose to do what was better for his team, rather than sit the last game out to ensure that he would win the batting title. He always has been a true gamer and a great teammate! Nothing new!
I dont get to watch you play anymore i catch up with mash or when we get a chance talk to you but knowing you the way i do you would never even tell me you won what your 35th batting title???? anyway congrats to one of the finest people to ever step on the ball field and i would say there arent many players in CDMSBL that dont have kind words to say about you... Youre a tru HOF in everyone's book and i think at some point you should pick on guys your own age... :) Congratulations again on a trmendous acheivment Mane.. To win it in your last at bat and to take the title from some great players is something..Its great to have the players you have surrounded yourself with over the years or maybe i should say the players that surround you...All the kudos are well deserved and best of luck to the Marlins in the playoffs... I sent mash som shoes for the playoffs but he has to return them to me in FLorida...
That NEVER even crossed Mark's mind. Never said a word about it and didn't even know he was hitting .600. It'll be a nice race for MVP: Tom and Mark are at least two of the contenders. Mark led the league with FOUR HRs, two via the hard way at Satellite where he had to run it out. Balls were hit so far that there was never an issue with holding him up at 3rd.
