Great post for someone who is "not that smart" and a terrible speller, you bad some good points. I think a fair way to determine playoff eligibility would be to use percentage of games played based on the amount of games completed by the team. In a 20 game schedule, 8 would be 40% of 20. If a player has played in at least 40% of the teams games he should be eligible for the playoffs whether the team played 10 or 20 games.

We don't stop playing because we get old, we get old because we stop playing.
There is no bones about it...It doesn't sound like "Sour Grapes"...it is sour grapes. I normally don't post on here, probrably because my stats don't allow me to or I am not a name that pepople are familiar with but I felt a need to.
Normally all I would say is - Randy, Steve and the rest of the guys congratualations on a great season. You guys played a hell of a series and are great competitors and if I return ( if my arm and wife let me...lol) I hope to see you on the field.
I originally had tons to write but in the end I am not that smart and spelling can be brutal after awhile. When it comes right down to the waiver its pretty simple....no need to do any math...no matter how you twist it, turn it, cut it or peel it is simple. For undisclosed reasons the season was shortened, I say undisclosed because I still have no idea why the hell the season ended like it did. The season is 20 game, thats right twenty. Unfortunately for the league and some players on the cut line were put in a bad position. Some players were COUNTING on those remaining games to make the playoff roster. Now I don't care if they play 10 different leagues or live in Kinston...players are relying on those 20 games to make the roster. If the league had decided to cut the season short for whatever reason then they MUST accomadate those team that have players that would have met the requirements had the season been completed. Jim K stated that there are only two reasons for missing a game: Family and work and maybe some others many of you will argue for, but what's more important than family and work? Injury?... well what about "Life" in general??? we all love the game that is why we still play but sometimes life gets in the way so I don't agree Kim K on this point. the simple fact is that the league put teams and players in a bad spot and had to make consessions.
There was a time and place to bring this up and that fact that was brought up right after two teams played a great series for the 35 championship is just BUSH League in my opinion.
Once again - Randy, Steve and the rest of the guys congratualations on a great season. You guys played a hell of a series and are great competitors
Hey Jay I'll stick to my opinion in that an injured player for the most part can still attend games and do something. Yes, life gets in the way; I totally agree. But where does one draw the line. There are rosters on our Web site with guys on them who have not made a game. Some have made 1, 2 or 3. Can they then say, "well, been busy with life and now I want to play in the playoffs?''
I understand what you are saying, but realistically, if we don't have some sort of expectation, then we have a free-for-all for waiver requests.
As for Girard's posting as being sour grapes, he'd get the same reply if he objected BEFORE the finals or playoffs began. I'll assume he waited so it WOULDN'T appear that way - or at least less of an appearance of sour grapes. Exactly when is the right time? Regardless of anyone's opinion, it certainly can be challenged with reason no matter when you object. And his point is valid: Great suggestion that games not made up be based on a percentage. Not to place blame on Tom Smith becasue he does a whole lot of work for CDMSBL, but for any Commissioner, read the rules. If the two managers of a game that is PPD do not find an amendable date to reschedule within 48 hours, then the Commissioner is to do it and that date is binding. To not make up a game PPD in May is truly inexcusable.
And BTW, I can tell you first-hand that Mike's first concern on how the Cubs lost in the finals had nothing to do with waivers, games played, the Commissioner or venue. He is simply making a point that the issue nees to be addressed.
And BTW, Jay, when you turn 45, the Giants have a jersey awaiting you :)
Just to add my tid bits, I have a few other areas/suggestions for improvement that I think would make the league a little better.
1). All games that could affect potential teams getting in or seeding in the playoffs should have to be played regardless. If that means the playoffs get pushed back then so be it. If that means the commish has to schedule the games because the managers can't get together then so be it and if somebody forfeits then so be it. To not schedule them is ridiculous. I paid money to play in 20 games not 16 or some other number. I play because I enjoy it just like everyone else, so even what could be a meaningless game to round out the season is still well worth it. To accommodate equality the playoffs should also start at least 1 week after the final game was played so that each team can have a rested pitching staff. The best from each team should go against best from another. What was the rush to get the playoffs started this year, as far as i can see the weather is still warm enough through October for baseball. For example my team the birds played 0 games against the cubs the reg season champs, it sure would have been nice to see their squad and how we stacked up against them. I guess there is always next year
2). Something has to be done about the fields for the playoffs. Reg season ill play wherever but playoffs? Shuttleworth is average at best and bob Moore is a joke. At B.M. Lefty hitters are blinded by the sun when they hit until it goes down and at nighttime the lights are so low in the outfield where I felt that the glare from them was affecting my hitting. We should be playing on the best fields for these games regardless of location to the higher seed. I'd rather travel 20 extra min for a legit field. If it costs more so what, maybe the money sucked out of me for the 4 games that were canned from our schedule could be put to good use.
3). Buy some decent baseballs. I have never held such a piece of sh.. when I pitched. 1 swing and the ball was oblong, the stitching was ripping, or the cover would swish around the hard inner core. Some of them felt a little larger than others if thats even possible. I think the little league baseballs found at dicks sporting are of better quality and probably cost significantly less. Who cares if it doesn't have the league logo or whatever insignia is on them. I still don't know how that guy on the dodgers hit that hr off me in game 3 considering the mush that was thrown, maybe he was on the clear or cream or something. Maybe Somebody must have slipped a ball from their own bag into the mix, kudos to him either way.
4). As far as min # of games to be played... who cares. A team should have to submit a roster by a certain date and that's your team. If a player doesn't play in any games it shouldn't matter. In MLB if a guy is out all year he can play in the playoffs as long as he was on the original roster to start the season. This is more of a item for a team to address within each team. For example if I busted my butt pitching all year and my manager let JJ or shook ( no disrespect boys just using your names since they are household) pitch in front of me and they had been there for only 2 games I would be seriously pissed. Winning the cdmsbl championship isn't that important, I feel that you play in the playoffs with the team that got you there not a group of imposters. If my manager viewed it otherwise another team/league would be on the agenda for next year. Eventually that manager would be left with just their poster child's and would have to forfeit their reg season the following year. In addition the min rule doesn't work in the case of pitchers. So if I start 1 out of 4 games I only get 5 for the whole 20 games, if I even get to play 20. This means my manager is forced to pinch run me for a catcher or put me in right field for one out defensively just to get my games played up.. It's a joke to do so and a manipulation of the rule because did I really play in that game or contribute anything? Again manage the rule within, join/play on teams with character and with the thought of why the game was invented to begin with, not to brag to your spouse or other over the hill buddies about how good you still think you are.
A lot of people are critizing the dodgers, for what? The birds could gripe about how the playoff schedule changed which allowed shook to easily throw in games 2 and 3. The dodgers would certainly argue about a Sammy Sosa bat in game one. But guess what the bat didn't mean squat in game one and the birds contibuted to their demise in game 3. I pitched lousy, defense made 5-6 errors at least, and when we had solid contact against shook a dodger seemed to be right in the line of the ball. They deserved to win, they made no costly errors, had timely hitting, and capitalized on our blunders. That's how you win a game and how the sticks fall sometimes. I'd sure like a rematch and to have both teams playing their best ball. Win or lose that would be enjoyable. I don't think in any of our 3 games we saw that. Game 1 dodgers were off and 2 and 3 the birds were off, just stinks because I think both teams missed out on what could have been a fantastic series.
1. I couldn't agree more. The season should have been played out. I have yet to hear a good reason why we shouldn't do it. Some guys said they would have players missing playoff games and others said it would interfere with the Labor Day tourney. Well, lots of guys missed the playoffs anyway and the 35's are struggling to get a team together to participate in the Labor Day tournament. Perhaps it's time to have the 35 Division focus on what's good for the 35 Division and let the other divisions worry about their schedules/rosters/tournaments.
2. I kind of agree with this, however Gruner is one of the nicest fields in the region. It's unrealistic to expect that all fields will measure up to Gruner. Shuttleworth isn't bad but it isn't great and it's a long way for everyone - but I don't get the Bob Moore hate, I really like it there; we just need to hammer out better scheduling with them so we don't have to continually cut games off.
3. Agreed. I think the baseballs were not the league's fault but we as a league have to put research into finding a new distributer if that quality of ball is going to continue.
4. I actually really like this line of thinking. It would lead to a roster of about 25-30 players per team every year but would solve a lot of problems. Kudos to out-of-the-box thinking here.
5. Agree. In fact, I was ribbed by my Dodgers teammates for suggesting that the 'Birds were hosed by the scheduling. It was pointed out to me that many of us Dodgers had to drive well over an hour (myself included) to get to Shuttleworth. Rain cost us game 3 which allowed Shook to pitch again. At the end of it all, we still had to play the 'Birds and they had to play us. Also, we still had to play the Cubs and they still had to play us. Dave Ames and Scott Bonnano have been on our roster all year long - in fact Dave has been on for two years and plays in (and manages in, I understand) the 25's, coaches little league and is an all around great guy who doesn't cheat, and Scott has been on this particular franchise's roster through three name changes and was Ralph's assistant for a couple of years. It's not like we just found them recently cut from major league rosters and said, "would you like to help us win a championship?" These are league guys and have been for years.
Again, easy for me to say. I am the beneficiary of being on the roster of the team that won it all. But we got hosed like everyone else did by the weather, the shortened games, the lack of fields, forced to travel with shortened rosters to Shuttleworth, etc. If we fix these field problems going into next year maybe we can get back to talking about the great on-the-field drama and not this off-season drama.
