The Golden Marlins prevailed over the Reds 6 - 3, on Sunday night at New Scotland. Marlins pitchers, Phil Gadomski and Mike Clary scattered 7 hits and limited the Reds to just 3 runs, and Ron Lochner drove in 4, as the Marlins completed the season sweep over the Reds.
The Marlins took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning, when Tom Maney and Mike Clary led off the inning with a ROE and a walk. Mike Girard followed with a RBI double off the left field fence, and Ron Lochner drilled a 2 RBI single.
The Reds responded quickly in the top of the second. Pete Geanellis and Charlie Handford set the table with singles. Rich Wander drove in Geanellis with a single up the middle, but Mike Clary cut down Handford at third with a perfect throw from center field, for the first out. George Schillinger reached on an error, and after an infield pop out, Dave Schillinger lined a two-out 2 RBI double, to tie the game at 3. Gadomski escaped further damage by striking out the final hitter.
The Marlins would re-establish control of the game in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Tom Maney led off with a single and stole second. Mike Clary walked. Pete Geanellis, on in relief for the Reds, got Girard to hit into a fielder's choice. Girard stole second base, and the Fish had runners on second and third with one out. Ron Lochner promptly drove the ball off of the top of the left field wall, for his second 2 RBI single of the game. After an infield pop out Phil Gadomski singled (his 2nd of 3 on the day) and Jim McQuade walked. The final run of the game scored when Geanellis hit TJ Scorsone with a 2 - 2 pitch with the bases loaded.
Mike Clary came on in the 5th for the Marlins and pitched the last 3 innings, without giving up a run, for his first save of the year.
The Reds end the regular season at 8-8. The Golden Marlins moved to 13 - 2, with just one game remaining, next Sunday vs. the Yankees.
Glad to see Mike Clary back on the hill again after so many years. With a sound arm, Mike is one of the very best. And don't take a big lead! He picked off 3 runners or was it 4? JimK
