An early morning rain gave wave to a beautiful day for baseball at New Scotland Town Park, on Saturday morning. After a slow start, the Cubs got in gear in the second inning and pulled away to an easy 16-2 victory. Reds' starter, Jim Bonaparte, set the Cubs down in order, in the top of the first and Tony Parella hit a two-run home run, in the bottom of the inning, to give the Reds a 2-0 lead. After the 1st inning was in the books, the Cubs found another gear, and scored 16 unanswered runs. Cubs starter, Phil Gadomski, settled in and gave up just two hits and no walks, while striking out 3, over the next 4 innings, to pick up the win. Tom Shepardson pitched the last two innings for the Cubs, striking out 4 of the 6 batters that he faced. Meanwhile, the Cubs bats rang out 12 singles, 3 doubles, and two home runs, in plating 16 runs over the last 6 innings. Phil Gadomski led the way with 2 singles, a double and 4 RBI's. Andy Hoyle had a double, home run, and 3RBI's. Mike Girard had a single, home run, and 3 RBI's as well. Jon Martin was 3 for 4, with a RBI, and Dan Mirabile and Ron Massaroni chipped in with two hits each. Eric Kohl had a double and single for the Reds. The Cubs improve to 10-1-1, with the win; and the Reds fall to 3-10 , with the loss.
