There is nothing like an aged single malt Scotch-it goes down smoothly, and after a few it has you nailed and out. Well, Sunday at NS Jerry Solomon, aged and ever getting better, put the Yankees down and out, with, in my scorebook, no hits. Not only in my scorebook but in my gut, my heart and my head. As the Sox rightfielder lined up the "can of corn" flyball, at the last instant he turned his head blinded by sun and the ball fell at his feet. I was not about to give the batter nor the sun credit for a hit. Jerry was absolutely outstanding, facing the minimum amount of batters through four innings, 4 batters in the fifth, 6 in the sixth (4 errors), and finishing in style with a 1-2-3 seventh. The Yankee batters are not what anyone would call easy going for a pitcher. Of the 25 batters Jerry faced only 3 managed to get the ball into the outfield, 2 F-8's and 1 E-9. Jerry's pitching line: 7 IP- 1 R- 0 ER- 0 H- 0 BB- 7 K- 1 HB.
The Yankees were most gracious in their congratulations extended to Jerry after the game. Oh, and just for the hell of it, Jerry got a base hit his first time up and was robbed of another by an outstanding backhanded stab of a shot deep in the third base hole by Mark Marshall. The Yankees played a solid defensive game and Darren, I don't recall his last name, sorry, had 5 K's on his ledger through 5 innings.
Dave Booker provided all the offense the Sox needed with 3 doubles, 2 rbi and 2 runs scored. Every Sox player contributed in our win. Great game, Jerry!!
