The first time these two teams got together, on Opening Day, the temperature was *maybe* 40 degrees, the wind was blowing the infield dirt in every which direction, and the game itself was one of the wildest most of us had ever seen....a 15-14 Dodger win.
Today---completely the opposite, in a lot of ways. Not a cloud in the sky, mid 80's, and former Dodger (manager) Ed Rogers tossed a complete game against his former teammates to pick up his first win as a member of the Cyclones, 7-5. Ed allowed only 8 hits, and get this. The Dodgers, one of the most feared hitting teams in the division, popped the ball up *11* times. A 12th situation---somewhat more of a line drive---became an unassisted double play when SS Francisco Rosello caught the ball and stepped on second.
One man Ed wasn't really able to get out...Nick Karellis. Two towering extra-base hits, one to CF and one to LF. He does that a lot. One of the best hitters in the league.
For the Cyclones, Bob Weitz had 3 RBI's. Gene Rodriguez, another former Dodger, had 4 stolen bases and two runs scored. Manny Marrufo and Francisco Rosello had two hits apiece.
Turning point of the game came in the top of the 4th. With the score tied at 4-4, and Nick, the potential go-ahead run on third, Hicks hit one down the LF line. Cyclones mgr Read Shepherd grabbed the ball off the ground for the third out. After that, Rogers retired the next 6 in a row and 9 of the next 12 Dodgers to close out the win.
Cyclones go next on Tuesday against the always-tough Reds.
John--the Dodgers are a great team, and it's always a pleasure to get together with you guys on the field--no matter what the weather conditions!
