On a chilly, overcast, Wednesday night, the WhizKids and Cardinals played their 1st game of the season, with the Whiz winning 4-2. Chris Abrams (1-0), went the distance- 7 IP, 2 unearned runs, and 5 K's. John LaTorre pitched well for the Cards, getting 4 K's over the 1st 2 innings, but was victimized by 2 errors in the 1st. Tom Maney led off the game with a walk, and Mike Lannon doubled him to 3rd. Ralph Caputo had an RBI groundout, and he was safe at 1st on an error. Abrams scored Lannon with a single, and Caputo later scored on an error. Bob Yakatan got 1 run back for the Cards in the bottom half of the 1st. He led off with a walk, stole a base, and later scored on an error. They added another unearned run in the 5th on a single by Jack Swortfiquer, and he scored on an error. The Whiz got an insurance run in the 7th. Porter led off with a single-the 1st hit off Cardinal pitching since the 1st inning-stole 2nd, and scored on a single by Joe Torre. Abrams made it stand by getting a groundout, BB, K, and a grounder to SS to end the game. Nice to get the 1st game in, and let's hope for warmer weather! Jim Porter-WhizKids
