O.K., so it was the ONLY game of the week due to 3 rainouts! Thanks to Darrell Duncan and his crew, the field at New Scotland was the setting for the first game of the season between the WhizKids and the visiting Cardinals. The Cardinals are new to the division this year, but as you will read later on in this post, they are stockpiled with veterans of the 45's, 35's, 25's,... The Whiz took an early 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Anthony Torre and a bases loaded walk to Chris Abrams. The Cards answered in the top of the 2nd as Doug Zmewski, Paul Watson, and Jim LaTorre scored. Back came the Whiz with 3 in their half of the inning on runs by Jesse Braverman, Ed Draves, and Jim Konstantakis. After a quiet 3rd inning, the Cards scored 3 times to take the lead for good in the 4th. Jerry Hawkins, Read Shepherd, and Jerry Solomon all scored. The Cards added a solo run in the 5th, and 4 in the 6th. Both teams showed early season rust, and some misguided baserunning, but it was great to get the first game in. Congratulations to Fred Phillips and his team for their inaugaral victory. It certainly will be the first of many as the Whiz got to see the pitching of John and Jim LaTorre, Rick Lafredo, and Jerry Solomon. The Cards don't have any shortage of pitchers. Thanks to Fred for umping the game so the teams could get this game in. Called after 6 due to darkness. Jim Porter-WhizKids
